In honor of American Public Health Week, we are highlighting the incredible work being done by individuals like Shante Brookshire, the Deputy Director of the Complex Care and Social Needs Department.
As Deputy Director, Shante plays an integral role in overseeing two essential programs that contribute significantly to public health. The Recovery Care Services-State Care Coordination Program and the Returning Citizens Community Connections Program focus on addressing complex care needs and supporting individuals in recovery and reentry.
Shante ensures that participants in both programs are connected to the services and resources they need to achieve and maintain better health. Whether it’s helping individuals in recovery stay sober or supporting returning citizens in their journey to reintegrate into society, her leadership and dedication to improving the lives of individuals facing complex health and social challenges is a shining example of the impact public health professionals have on communities.
When asked about the value of her own education, Shante reflected on her personal journey, “One of the best decisions I made was obtaining this degree.” Her path to leadership in public health was shaped by a deep desire to make a meaningful difference in her community.
For those looking to obtain a public health degree, Shante encourages prospective public health professionals to be proactive in their research and involvement with the field. “Do intensive research on what you want to specialize in. Join public health groups and apply for membership through APHA (American Public Health Association) and the Maryland Public Health Association so you can keep up with trends.”
This American Public Health Week, take a moment to recognize the work of leaders like Shante and remember that education, research, and community involvement are key to building a future where everyone has the opportunity to lead a healthy life. As she powerfully puts it, “obtain a degree that you can make a difference with and change the narrative for you and your community.”
Thank you, Shante. We are so grateful to have you at HealthCare Access Maryland!
