Open Enrollment is a designated period of time each year during which individuals or employees can enroll in a health insurance plan or make changes to their coverage (Maryland Health Connection). This year’s Open Enrollment kicked off on Tuesday, November 1st, and runs through Sunday, January 15th. Individuals’ can enroll in health plans at MarylandHealthConnection.gov.  

We sat down with Ashley Pitt, a Senior Navigator at HealthCare Access Maryland (HCAM) to discuss some Frequently Asked Questions related to Open Enrollment. Read below to find out more about Open Enrollment and how you can ensure that you and your family are covered. 

I am currently uninsured, where do I go to sign up for health insurance?
You can call (410) 500-4710 to schedule an appointment with an HCAM Certified Navigator to apply for a health plan via phone or in person. Go to www.marylandhealthconnection.gov to apply online or download the free mobile app for easy, user-friendly navigation.  

What information and documents do I need to sign up for health insurance? 
We will need all applicant’s demographic information, income, and immigration information, with supporting documents. Example of document needed: paystubs, tax return forms, immigration status documents, etc. 

What type of assistance is available by applying through Maryland Health Connection?
You can apply for Medicaid, a qualified health plan with assistance, or a qualified health plan without financial assistance.  

If I enroll in health insurance, when will my coverage begin?
If you enroll by December 31st, your coverage will begin January 1, 2023. With the extension of Open Enrollment, if you enroll by January 15th, your coverage will begin February 1, 2023.

When is the deadline for Open Enrollment?
This year’s Open Enrollment deadline is Sunday, January 15, 2023.
