Speaker Series: Housing, Health, and Healthcare

Matthew Doherty, Consultant and former Executive Director of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, speaks at the February Speaker Series event.

In February 2020, HealthCare Access Maryland introduced the Speaker Series of events to engage our community in conversations on critical health equity issues. The Speaker Series brings together leading health experts and top businesses to provide insights into effective health and wellness practices for Maryland businesses.

The first Speaker Series event in the five-part series was hosted on February 25th at Gertrude’s. Keynote speaker Matthew Doherty, Consultant and former Executive Director of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, discussed the ways in which housing, health, and healthcare intersect, both in the challenges of people experiencing homelessness face, and in the most effective solutions communities need to implement.

Doherty shared “The challenges of 2020 have included the COVID-19 pandemic’s painful, devastating demonstration of how important being able to be safe within our homes is for our very health and lives. And how starkly inequitable access to housing, safety, and health – and life itself – is in our country. We must not allow ourselves to forget these lessons and reminders – and together we must tackle these inequities more purposefully and aggressively than ever before.”
